When the Story Isn’t Finished Yet

Today’s Reading: Isaiah 65–66 & Revelation 21:1

Hope for Today

I like knowing how things are going to turn out.

I want the plan. The timeline. The answer. Preferably with a little checkmark beside it telling me everything is going to be okay.

But lately, life has felt like one big collection of unfinished stories.

I look at my kids and wonder what their futures will hold. One is trying to figure out health, work, independence, and what comes next. The other is navigating school, sports, coaches, decisions about the future, and eventually college.

And if I’m being truthful, sometimes I want God to just show me the ending.

Tell me they’re going to be okay.

Then there’s my own life.

After some health struggles and getting knocked out of my normal routine, I’ve been trying to find my way back. I want to wake up early again. Work out. Eat better. Keep up with Bible study. Be present for my family. Work. Grow Hope 40:31. Take care of the house.

Yesterday, I planned to work out.

I didn’t.

But I did get up earlier.

It would be easy to look at that and think, Here we go again. I failed.

But maybe God is teaching me something different:

Not everything has to be finished to be moving forward.

Maybe you have some unfinished stories too.

A child you’re worried about.A relationship you’re praying for.A diagnosis you never expected.A dream that hasn’t happened.A loss you’re still learning to carry.A decision you desperately want God to make clear.Or maybe you’re simply trying to become the person you know God is calling you to be—and progress feels painfully slow.

Isaiah 65 gives us an incredible promise:

“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth…”

Then, generations later, John writes in Revelation 21:

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth…”

Isaiah received the promise.

John saw the fulfillment.

And there was a whole lot of waiting in between.

God was still working when His people couldn’t see the finished story.

And He is still working now.

God is working in the child whose future you cannot control.

He is working in the healing that isn’t complete.

He is working in the prayer that seems unanswered.

He is working in the grief that still catches you off guard.

He is working in the dream that looks nothing like you thought it would.

And He is working in you—even when your progress feels more like tiny steps than giant leaps.

Isaiah 65:24 says:

“Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear.”

God has heard the prayer you’ve prayed a hundred times.

You don’t have to manufacture the answer.

You don’t have to figure everything out today.

You don’t have to carry responsibility for outcomes that were never yours to control.

You can love well. Pray faithfully. Take the next right step. And place the rest back into God's hands.

Isaiah 66 gives us another beautiful promise:

“As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.” — Isaiah 66:13

Maybe you’re usually the one taking care of everyone else.

The encourager.The fixer.The strong one.The person everyone calls when life falls apart.

God wants to comfort you, too.

You were never meant to hold everyone and everything together.

That's His job.

And Revelation 21 reminds us where the entire story is headed.

Brokenness doesn't get the final word.

Sickness doesn't get the final word.

Mental health struggles don't get the final word.

Disappointment doesn't get the final word.

Grief doesn't get the final word.

Failed plans don't get the final word.

Jesus does.

That doesn't mean every situation on this side of heaven will turn out exactly the way we hope. Our confidence isn't that God will give us every outcome we want.

Our hope is something deeper:

Whatever happens, God is still God. He is still good. He is still working. And He is still making all things new.

So maybe today we don't need God to show us the ending.

Maybe we just need enough faith for this page.

Enough faith to get up again.

Enough faith to keep praying.

Enough faith to release the people we love into God's hands.

Enough faith to take one small step forward.

Enough faith to believe that something can still be beautiful while it is unfinished.

Because the God who promised in Isaiah, “I create new heavens and a new earth,” is the same God who declares in Revelation:

“Behold, I am making all things new.”

He isn't finished.

Not with the person you're praying for.

Not with you.

Not with this story.

A Prayer for Today

Father, sometimes it is hard to trust You when I cannot see what You are doing. I want answers. I want clarity. I want to know that the people I love will be okay and that the things I am praying for will work out the way I hope.

Help me trust You in the unfinished places.

When I am worried about someone I love, remind me that You love them even more than I do. When my own progress feels slow, help me recognize the small steps forward. When plans change, doors close, or prayers seem unanswered, remind me that Your work is not limited to what I can see.

Comfort me when I am tired of being strong.

Give me wisdom for the things that are mine to do and faith to release the things that are not mine to control.

Help me stop trying to read the final chapter when You are simply asking me to trust You with today's page.

I don't need to know how this story ends to trust the One writing it.

Keep making me new, Lord, and help me trust that You are working in every unfinished story I place in Your hands.
