When You Can’t See How the Story Turns Out

🌿 The Messy Middle

One of the hardest parts of being a mom is watching your kids walk through seasons you cannot fix for them.

There are seasons of mental health struggles when I desperately want to know that everything is going to be okay.

There are seasons of learning new roles, dealing with disappointment, and figuring out where you fit when life doesn't look the way you thought it would.

There are school days when simply showing up and pushing through feels like an accomplishment.

And as their mom, I want to see the ending.

I want God to hand me the next few chapters and say, “Here. Look. They make it through. This is where I'm taking them.”

But He usually doesn't.

Instead, He asks me to trust Him here—in the chapter we're actually living.

💜 What God Is Teaching Me

In Isaiah 45–48, God repeatedly reminds His people that He already knows what is coming. He is working through circumstances they don't understand, and He promises:

“I have made you, and I will carry you.”

Then in John 13:19, Jesus tells His disciples what is going to happen before it happens. He knows they are about to experience confusion, fear, and heartbreak.

Jesus knows something they don't:

The painful chapter isn't the whole story.

Maybe that's what I need to remember with my kids too.

I don't know exactly how the mental health struggles will shape them.

I don't know where the disappointments, changing roles, or difficult school seasons will lead.

I don't know what their lives will look like a year—or five years—from now.

But God does.

And maybe my job isn't to figure out their entire story.

Maybe my job is to love them through today's chapter, remind them who they are, encourage them to keep showing up, and trust God with the pages I can't see yet.

🤍 Hope for Today

If you're watching someone you love struggle, you don't have to know how their story turns out before you can have hope.

God sees beyond this season.

The struggle isn't necessarily the destination.The disappointment isn't the end.The role they're learning today doesn't define their whole future.And a hard season doesn't mean God has stopped working.

Sometimes faith sounds less like “I know everything is going to work out exactly how I want” and more like:

“Jesus, I don't know how this story turns out. But I know You love my children even more than I do. So today, I'm trusting You with them again.”

🙏 Prayer

Jesus, You know how badly I want my kids to be okay. You know the things they carry and the things I worry about when no one else sees.

Help me remember that You see chapters I cannot.

Carry them when they're tired. Give them courage to keep showing up. Help them discover who You created them to be—not just through their successes, but through the hard seasons too.

And when I want to rush ahead and know how everything turns out, teach me to trust You with today's page.

I don't understand this chapter yet, Lord. But I trust the Author.
